We have been studying American Folk songs in third grade. There are many
catagories of folk songs, including work songs, game songs, dance songs,
silly songs, spirituals, and ballads. Many of these songs help to tell
the story of our country. While studying folk songs, we also studied the
forms of these songs. We began with a phrase. A musical phrase is a
complete musical thought. Music phrases are like sentences. Sentences
are put into paragraphs, which are put into stories. Music phrases are
put together to create larger sections of music which can repeat or
contrast with each other. We are singing songs with the forms A, AB,
ABA, and AABA,. Then we learned about the Rondo form, in which the A
section returns inbetween all the other sections, such as ABACA. We
listened to several examples of Rondo form, then created our own Rondo
using some of our folk songs and instruments.

This is one of the songs we are singing.

Mister frog went a-courting and he did ride
Uh-hmm, Uh-hmm
Mister frog went a-courting and he did ride
A sword and pistol by his side
Uh-hmm, Uh-hmm.

Mrs. Schaeffer's class is learning to play the recorder!

See the recorder page for more information about the recorder.
