We have been learning about
ostinato. An ostinato is a repeating pattern
in music. An ostinato adds to the layers of texture to add interest to
a
piece of music. Texture in music is the layers of sound. When you listen
to music, what do you hear? How many voices and/ or instruments? What
is
each playing? All those instruments and voices create the texture of the
music. To help create texture, we have been singing and playing
instruments to "I Love Green Bananas." As we add each instrument,
playing an ostinato, we are creating the texture, those layers of sound.
We have also been singing octaves. An octave is an interval
of eight
steps. Intervals are the distance between pitches in music, and an
octave will bring you to the next pitch (high or low) of the same name,
for example, stepping eight steps up from middle C will bring you to the
next C. That is an octave. We sang "Hosana, Me Build a House,"
and
"Sarasponda," both of which contain octaves in the melody.
Next, we will be learning about harmony and creating chords. We will be
playing chords on the autoharp to "Hoe Ana Te Vaka," a song
from Tahiti.
