The format this year is the same as last year. You will be given a fact pattern and you will answer in three parts:

1. The team in possession for the next down (before the ready for play), i.e., A or B

2. The down and distance for the next down, i.e., 1/10; 3/22; 3/G; or K/O

3. The yard line the next snap/kick will occur, i.e., A-44; B-17; 50

Answer the questions as if the action occurred on the field of play. Some questions may ask for additional information, such as clock status. Answer the question as above and add the other information. Quite often the result of the play would not be an option on the field, so apply the rule that the team with the option would take. The following examples should help:

I Third and 4 on the A-24 yard line. QB A8 hands the ball off to Back A33 , who runs to the A-37 yard line where he is tackled. Tackle A77 held B91 at the line of scrimmage.

Answer: A 3/14 A-14. The holding incurs a ten yard penalty and the down is repeated.

II Fourth and 14 on the B-46 yard line. Punter A7s kick lands at the B-13 yard line and B25 muffs the ball at the B-7 yard line. The ball rolls into the end zone where A55 pushes B25 squarely in the back in an attempt to get to the ball. However, B44 falls on the ball in the end zone.

Answer: B 1/10 B-20. There is no foul - B touched the ball in the field of play - ball remains alive (still a kick).

III First and 10 on the B-18 yard line, first series of overtime. B44 is offside at the snap. QB A8 hands the ball off to Back A33 who runs to the B-6 yard line where he is tackled. During A33's run, A82 held B21 at the B41 yard line.

Answer: A 1 /10 B-18. The live ball fouls will offset and the down repeated.

Be sure to include any special circumstances, such as a disqualification (DQ B33) or an extension of a period (Extend). In a very few questions, the captain of the 'offended' team will have a choice that will NOT be obvious. That choice would have to be made only by that team. In those cases, give both possible answers (A 3/8 B-41 or A 1/10 A-42).
