2008 NCAA FOOTBALL RULES & INTERPRETATIONS

PRESEASON QUIZ #3: May 13, 2008

RULING FORMAT: Team (A or B) in possession, down and distance, yardline and status of clock if relevant (example: A 1/10 A40, clock on snap). Include other relevant information such as extension of period and whether a 40 or 25 second play clock will be employed.

1. PLAY: Third and 10 on B's 30. B44 intercepts A17's legal forward pass on B's 4 and his momentum carries him into B's end zone where he fumbles. The ball rolls into the field of play and is muffed back into B's end zone by A65. B44 recovers while grounded in B's end zone.

2. PLAY: Fourth and goal on B's 9. A14 throws a legal forward pass to A88 deep in B's end zone. A88 has control of the ball while airborne as he comes down head first. The ball, still in control of A88, comes out when the ball hits the ground prior to any part of A88's body hitting the ground.

3. PLAY: Fourth and goal on B's 8. A33 advances to B's 3 where he fumbles. B66 recovers in B's end zone, attempts to advance and fumbles while still in B's end zone. A77 recovers the ball in B's end zone.

4. PLAY: Fourth and 10 on A's 10. The score is A28-B28. A4's punt is blocked. B66 bats the grounded ball backward from A's 2, the ball hits A88 on A's 3 and rolls into A's end zone. A4 picks up the ball in A's end zone and punts again. The ball lands on A's 8 and rolls backward and out of bounds in A's end zone. Time expires in the fourth quarter during the down.

5. PLAY: Try on B's 3. Third extra period. Second series. The score is A44-B44. B44 intercepts A17's legal forward pass on B's 2, starts to advance, is hit and fumbles. The ball rolls into B's end zone from where B96 bats the ball out of bounds on B's 1.

6. PLAY: Second and 4 on B's 14. Eligible receiver A88 fires out and blocks linebacker B56 on B's 12. QB A19 is chased out of a pocket by a posse who are about to wipe him out when he slings the ball forward from B's 22. The pass lands on B's 13. No Team A eligible receiver had a reasonable opportunity to catch the pass.

7. PLAY: Fourth and 14 on A's 36. The game clock is running at the ready for play. B44 muffs A7's punt on B's 22 when the ball slips through his arms. An inadvertent whistle sounds after B44's muff when the ball is at B's 18. B65 blocks A87 in the back on B's 28 before the inadvertent whistle. Clock?
